Expository Documentary
An expository documentary is a documentary that speaks directly to the viewer either in the form of a voice over or through the use of titles that proposes a strong argument and point of view. An example of an Expository Documentary would be the two hour documentary '14 Degrees- A paranormal documentary'. In which the filmmakers interview Demonologists and explore haunted location. This is expository as we are sitting back and watching as the film makers inform us with facts and express their opinion on the paranormal.
Observational Documentary
An Observational Documentary is a documentary that observe everyday life and can be filmed using hand held cameras and no interviews as the whole purpose is to observe the events taking place. The documentary also doesn't portray the film makers point of view and it also involves synchronous sounds and long takes. An example of an Observational documentary would be 'Salesmen', in which we follow the process of door to door sales.
Interactive Documentary
An Interactive documentary is a documentary in which the film makers presence is shown and they participate in the events taking place. The film maker interacts with the subject and interviewees. An example of this would be 'Louis Behind Bars', in which Louis Theroux visits San Quentin State Prison to talk to the guards and inmates.
Performative Documentary
A performative documentary is a documentary that is used to represent the world indirectly and focus on presentation instead of focusing on the subject. It uses re-enactments, exaggerates camera positions and soundtracks to immerse the audience into the diegesis. The documentary tries to present the subject at hand in an expressive, stylized, evocative and visceral way.
Reflexive
A reflexive documentary is when the film maker is in front of the camera and is engaging his/herself in the activities or the events surrounding the topic of the documentary, while still being detached from the subject. They would typically casually interview the subjects and the documentary would be seen as meta as the film makers are aware of their presence in front of the camera.
An example of a reflexive documentary would be Nick Broomfield's 'Driving Me Crazy'
